Black Ops 3 CryptoKeys – Full Overview and How to Get Them

If you’re just getting started in Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 you’ve no doubt noticed that there’s something a little new in the game that we’ve never seen before – cryptokeys. What are these items? Well, it’s actually an in-game currency. Below we explain exactly what these keys are, how you can get them, and why you want them.

Black Ops 3 CryptoKeys

After the wild success of Supply Drops in Advanced Warfare, Activision and Treyarch have decided to put these nifty little loot chests in BO3 as well. The system works a bit differently from AW, though. In order to get a supply drop you’ll need some of the new currency.

Black Ops 3 Cryptokeys

CryptoKeys can be exchanged at the Black Market for, you guessed it, supply drops. Currently these are the options available:

  • Common Supply Drop – Costs 10 Cryptokeys
  • Rare Supply Drop – Costs 30 Cryptokeys

As the names suggest, a common supply drop will give you common pieces and a rare supply drop will grant you (according to the in-game description) at least one rare or better item.

How to Get Cryptokeys

So, this leads us to the big question – how in the world do you actually obtain any Cryptokeys in the first place? Well, as of right now there are just a few methods that are known to give you this currency.

These include:

  • Playing Matches Online (typically nets you 1 per match)
  • Completing Dark Ops Challenges
  • Rare Supply Drops (have a chance to drop bonus cryptokeys)
  • Contracts

Considering in Advanced Warfare you were able to actually flat-out buy supply drops with real money we also assume that the option to purchase Cryptokeys with actual money will be available in the very near future.

While this definitely has microtransaction written all over it, the good news here is that you CAN earn keys by simply playing the game. Now, that may become more difficult as you reach higher prestige levels and finish up the Dark Ops challenges, but it does seem that you’ll always be able to earn keys throughout the game which means you don’t HAVE to spend money on anything if you don’t want to.

If and when new details arise for this new currency – we’ll cover it right here on this page!

Rare supply drop is 30 keys, not 40. Also, Common Drops still give you a chance at Rare, Epic and Legendary Items. They are actually a better value. Rare supply drops only guarantee that you will get ONE rare or better Item. Someone did a statistical analysis, don’t remember where I saw it, and it made sense. They did a ton of different supply drops, even numbers of Common and Rare, and the results were overwhelmingly that Common drops are a better value. 9 chances as opposed to 3 for the same price. Rare Drops are just a rip off.
